When I listed a table for sale on Facebook Marketplace, I was amazed to quickly receive messages from 4 people all trying to run the Advance Fee Scam. This is one of the most prolific scams on the internet and it comes in various guises. The basics are always the same. If I send them money, they will send back a greater amount. Whatever form it takes, if someone asks you to send them money, it is always a scam.
I decided to bait a couple of them and this is the story of Paola Ricci.. At no point during this scam bait do I buy a gift card or transfer any money. I did do some magic to make it look like I had. I like to think of this scammer checking the bank account every 15 minutes for several days expecting to see that the money has arrived...
